Space Vessel Classification
Updated: 4 days ago
Spacecraft can be distinguished by a number of different measures.
The Terran Imperial Classification offers a comprehensive system based on function and capability. Vessels are classified by Kind, according to their spacefaring prowess; by Order, indicating their spacefaring mode; and by Type or Epithet, according to their specialization.

From these and the given name, the vessel’s full title is constructed:
The Noble Starship | Valiant Herald | Roving Lordship of Eddasuma |
Order and Kind | Given Name | Epithet |
Monocraft and Multicraft, Fusion and Fission
More general distinctions are often made based on power generation, Vessels with a single core reactor are designated as Monocraft, and with more as Multicraft. Both are further distinguished by their reactor type, Fusion or Fission. At their broadest, these classes give only a superficial idea of the scale and capability of vessels. Far more specific charts based on exact reactor models and their arrangements are a useful to for recognizing and identifying ship types by their heat signatures and emissions, especially when belonging to a known faction.
Scratchbuild-, Hybrid-, and Prefab-Vessels
In shipbuilding, categories based on hull design and construction are most common. In general terms, these distinguish between (1) a number of universal, prefabricated hull designs known for their high endurance and quality; (2) custom built and often more specialized hulls; and (3) combinations of the two.
Prefab-Hulls are found all across Gondwana, and while some are still being made in the industrial centers of the Star Frontier, the vast majority date back hundreds or even thousands of years and have been recycled countless times. Because they are forged in the most advanced foundries, sometimes even imbued with layers of Scrith, they are extremely durable and highly sought-after.
Scratchbuild-Hulls vary greatly in quality, with some produced to high-production standards almost rivalling Prefab-Hulls in manufacturing quality if not in material, while other scratchbuild designs are highly improvised or low-quality mass production designs.
Most space vessels hold some combination of the two and are technically hybrid designs, but the term is only used when Scratch- and Prefab-Hull segments are on roughly equal terms. If one is clearly more prominent, the vessel is designated accordingly.
