Mortals in a Divine Universe

The Gods of the Bonfire Stars are numerous, mighty, and very directly involved with the ongoing history of the setting. It is by their grace that high technology functions, civilizations are built, and wars are won.
That is not to say mortals in this universe have no agency or power. It simply means that dealing with the divine is just as important as any other skill to become a hero. There is no distinction here between “normal life” and “spiritual life”. When undergoing a star faring journey, the ritual of augury is just as much a necessary procedure as steering the ship. When leading a kingdom into war, understanding the fickle rivalries and loyalties of the Gods is just as crucial as the diplomacy with mortal allies and foes.
How strong the presence of the Gods is, how invested they are in meddling in the affairs of mortals, depends largely on the mortal domain. Generally, the Gods are drawn to mortals in places of Civilization, tending to their own devices in the Wilderness. Domains of High Civilization are typically stable, and the God’s touch direct but subtle. Domains of Low Civilization, however, are playgrounds to the Gods where the unrest and rivalry of mortals offer ample grounds for deities to carry out their feuds.
